in vitro (3). After the carrier state has ended (about 40 days after infection) and resistance to tumor challenge has declined, the latter can be †̃ †̃recalled' â€b̃y injection of i i RX protein antigen at the site of tumor challenge (4, 6). Activated macrophages have been suggested (e.g. , Ref. i) to have a function in immune surveillance against neoplasia. Since S. enteritidis combines the properties of a natural entenic pathogen and the ability to bring about macrophage activation, it seemed a particularly suitable organism to test for a protective effect against colon tumor induction. The experiments reported here demonstrate that repeated p.o. challenge with live S. enteritidis 11RX during the course of DMH administration sig nificantly and reproducibly reduced the incidence and/on ex tent of colonic tumors in 2 strains of mice.

Effects of Euphorbia hirta and Acidifiers Supplement on Resistance of Broiler Chickens against Salmonella enteritidis Infection: Oral Challenge Model

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Euphorbia hirta and acidifiers supplement on resistance of broiler chickens against Salmonella enteritidis infection. A total of 120 day-old male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments. 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet supplemented with 2 g/kg organic acid (OA) and 3) basal diet supplemented with 7.5 g/kg E. hir...

Dietary resistant starch type 3 prevents tumor induction by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine and alters proliferation, apoptosis and dedifferentiation in rat colon.

Some epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that consumption of resistant starch is preventive against colon cancer. Resistant starch leads to a fermentation-mediated increase in the formation of short-chain fatty acids, with a particularly high butyrate fraction in large bowel. Butyrate is considered to be protective against colon cancer because it causes growth arrest and apoptosis ...

Cabbage and vitamin E: their effect on colon tumor formation in mice.

The effects of cabbage and vitamin E on colon carcinogenesis were investigated in Swiss mice treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine. Throughout the experiment the mice were fed a laboratory chow diet (46 mg vitamin E per kg) or chow containing 13 g cabbage per 100 g or 180 mg vitamin E per kg. Starting after 31 days of diet treatment the mice received 7 weekly s.c. injections of DMH. They were sacr...

The Protective Effect of Cell Wall and Cytoplasmic Fraction of Selenium Enriched Yeast on 1, 2-Dimethylhydrazine-induced Damage in Liver

Background: 1, 2-Dimethylhydrazine (DMH) enhances lipid peroxidation rate by tumor mitochondria than normal tissue counterpart and causes many disorders in antioxidant system in liver. It also increases the level of enzymes that metabolize toxin in liver and colon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the alteration of liver and its enzymes after DMH injection and evaluate protective effect of...

Influence of dietary lipotrope and lipid content on aflatoxin B1, N-2-fluorenylacetamide, and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine carcinogenesis in rats.

A marginally lipotrope-deficient diet, high in fat, enhances hepatocarcinogenesis by aflatoxin B, , diethyland dibutyl-ni trosamine, or N-2-fluorenylacetamide and colon carcinogene sis by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in rats, when compared to a nutritionally complete diet that differs in several components from the deficient diet. Supplementation of the deficient diet with lipotropes and amino acids d...
